Bharata Natyam is a synthesis of music, rhythm and lyrics. Furthermore, elements and ideas of aesthetics, history, spirituality, mythology as well as of psychology and dramaturgy have to be well understood. The overwhelming presence of dance in literature and architecture underlines the importance of this art form.

Hence, even Shiva, one of the highest deities of hinduism, is seen as the Lord of Dance, preserving the world in perfect balance between his arms, ruling the universe by the rhythm of his cosmic dance. Dance, as all other art form of India, is never understood as an object of self-portrayal. The artists objective is to become an instrument or a courier and being played by the art itself.
